According to Quran we have 3 stages of transformations in the journey towards allegiance with Allah: Stage 1: Allegiance to gang (Seeking to belong - Identity based on affiliation to a group or ideology. Stick to forefathers footprints blindly. Stage 2: Allegiance to Ethnic culture (Revolt and Rejection to gang mentality - affiliation to different label such as atheism, extremism and any association to un-islamic creed or passive Islam or social islam etc. Attached to specific personality or staying at superficial interpretations of Islam. They think they are the only people possess the truth. Step 3 (final): Allegiance to Allah (Allegiance to authentic Scripture and Rassol- without any intermediary. The Quran stresses studying and exploring the Universe to conquer it: The Quran stressed reflection on the words and works of God. Travel, explore and discover outer physical universe and creation within it, so you can understand the laws it's being operated with. Once you know these laws you can start conquering the earhth and sky and whatever in between. (2) Lawwamah: the self that feels repentant at doing wrong, thinking wrong and willing wrong and reproaches man for this; and the same is called conscience in modern terminology.
